Contextual Effects on Vagueness and the Sorites Paradox: A Preliminary Study

چکیده

Context is a prominent theme in accounts of the semantics of vagueness. Contextual theories of vagueness have been motivated in part by a desire to disarm skeptical arguments that make use of vagueness; another motive is the hope that they might help to resolve the Sorites Paradox. This paper is intended as part of a larger project, which aims at describing and comparing the leading theories that have been presented, to bring out the ways in which contextual theories have informed the semantic phenomenon of vagueness, and to make strategic assesments and suggestions concerning the crucial case of adjectives. It concentrates on Hans Kamp’s 1975 theory, and two recent contributions by Haim Gaifman and Joseph Halpern. The specific goal of this paper is to examine the role of context in the semantics of certain adjectives, and assess to what extent context can help to solve what I take to be the most challenging version of the Sorites Paradox.

Vagueness Without Context Change

In this paper I offer a critique of the recent popular strategy of giving a contextualist account of vagueness. Such accounts maintain that truth-values of vague sentences can change with changes of context induced by confronting different entities (e.g. different pairs through a sorites series). I claim that appealing to context does not help in solving the sorites paradox, nor does it give us...

Facing up to the Sorites Paradox

The ancient sorites paradox is traditionally attributed to Eubulides, a contemporary of Aristotle and a member of the Megarian school, who is also credited with inventing the liar paradox. The sorites paradox figures centrally in most discussions of vagueness in philosophy and in logic. In my view, it has profound implications for metaphysics and semantics, as well as for logic. In this paper I...

Sorites without Vagueness I: Classificatory Sorites

An abstract mathematical theory is presented for a common variety of soritical arguments, treated here in terms of responses of a system, say, a biological organism, a gadget, or a set of normative linguistic rules, to stimuli. Any characteristic of the system’s responses which supervenes on stimuli is called a stimulus effect upon the system. Classificatory sorites is about the identity of or ...

Sorites paradox and vague geographies

The sorites paradox is ranked among the top ve paradoxes of philosophy (Sainsbury, Paradoxes, 2nd ed., Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1995). It is simply stated as ‘what is a heap’. Deriving from the paradox is a de nition of vagueness, which is contrary to the Boolean concept of the world implicit in much geographical teaching and thought, and the representation of geographical informa...

The Semantics and Metaphysics of Vagueness : A Contextualist Approach

Abstract. Vagueness is blamed for the Sorites Paradox. But the nature of vagueness is not well understood. Initially characterizing vagueness in terms of Sainsbury’s boundary metaphor, I argue that all semantic theories failing to do justice to this boundary metaphor are false. However, it is unclear what kind of semantic theory of vagueness is immune to this charge. I explore the boundary meta...
